Ourense, capital of the province of Ourense
• Main Square
The square shows colonnades of different styles and time periods;
of special interest are the town hall and the archaeological museum.
• Cathedral
The Cathedral of Ourense is the second major Romanesque temple in Spain
besides the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Originally it was built during the second
half of the XII Century and the beginning of the XIII Century. The structure dates back
to the Romanesque transition period and its ground plan has the shape of a Latin cross.
Inside the Cathedral the Pórtico del Paraíso (The Portico of Paradise), Santo Cristo,
the main chapel and the cathedral´s museum.
• Archaeological museum
The building is situated on the ground of the primitiv Roman
settlement and in former times it was used as the Bishop´s residence.
It was built during the XII Century for this purpose eventhough
it was subject to posterior enlargements like e.g.
the main front built in the XVIII Century.
• As Burgas – A Chavasqueira
As Burgas are thermal water springs (67ºC) which were already used by the Romans.
This is proven by the stone altars to be found at the upper part of As Burgas.
A Chavasqueira (www.termaschavasqueira.com),
are ferrous water springs. The building was recently restored and its facilities include the use of
various thermal water pools with different temperatures.
• The Roman bridge
Of Roman origin (its original foundations can still be seen) it was altered during the
XII, XIII y XVIII Century.
• The old town
The old centre of the town surrounding the cathedral shows typical paved streets and buildings of different time periods.
Great place for having tapas.
